The datatypes referred to in this section are those used by the GE machines, and may or may not correspond to those of the host computer. For example, "short" in this section always means two 8-bit bytes, no matter what "short" means on the slisp host computer. Also, values in the GE headers are always stored in big-endian format, whatever the byte-sex of the slisp host.
The functions in this section transparently convert from GE format to whatever the host format is.
In intended usage, the <string> argument to these functions is the header of a GE MRI/CAT image file, and <offset> is the location of a field within that header. These are low-level routine: see also the high-level that automatically compute the location of a field and return it's value, based on information from ge-tab.lsp.
