When should we stop supporting the Mac-specific browser?

I think the functions of the Mac browser are still important for teaching and distribution, and that the application should be kept until a replacement is found. The important capabilities for any such replacement are:

- it would allow the user to quickly navigate among images
- it would display 2D images, along with names & polygonal regions
- it would allow the user to access & control 3D animations
- it would improve on existing features used in classes at the UW
- it would work on a standalone machine when shipped via CD-ROM

I believe some Web browser could support all the essential features, especially if Java extensions are factored in; but I don't believe any Web-based data set has been demonstrated which can satisfactorily replace the Mac browser as it's currently being used. The real issue is multiplatform distribution, and while an implementation using Web tools may be the right path to that end, it cannot be said to have succeeded until it meets the above criteria.
