Mailstrom is an electronic mail reader for the Macintosh. Once it's installed and set up, it presents an easy-to-use "Mac-like" interface to your e-mail system. As an alternative to Mailstrom, you could also read mail on a Telnet connection using PINE, but many people prefer using Mailstrom because it lets you cut and paste between messages and other applications (such as Microsoft Word) that you may be using on your Mac. Mailstrom is the Macintosh software currently recommended by the campus folks for reading e-mail, superseding the older MacMS program. Mailstrom also has an address book feature. Keep in mind that the mail messages you read via Mailstrom are exactly the same ones you might otherwise look at using PINE -- and you can switch back and forth between the two systems any time you want. So if you have trouble connecting with Mailstrom, as sometimes happens when the hosts are heavily loaded, you might have better luck logging in with Telnet and running PINE in order to read your messages. They'll still be there next time you run Mailstrom. Mailstrom can be obtained using Fetch from ftp.cac.washington.edu, with the "anonymous" user ID, or I can furnish a copy for you.
