Assignment

1.  Read the following chapter and be prepared to discuss in class

Rosse, Cornelius and Mejino, Jose L V (2007) The Foundational Model of Anatomy Ontology, in Anatomy Ontologies for Bioinformatics: Principles and Practice.

2. Provide written answers to the following questions, to be turned in prior to the Wed class, as per these instructions.
All questions either refer to the FMA as observed in the FME, or the assigned chapter (above) on the FMA.

What is an ontology?

What is a taxonomy?

What is the difference  between  a reference ontology and an application ontology? Which is the FMA, and why?

Why is the preferred name of  tissue "portion of tissue" rather than   tissue?

Specify the classes of each these respiratory system structures in the FMA: pharynx, right lung, inferior margin of right lung. Are they all anatomical structures? Explain why or why not.

Is the surface of the right lung  part of the right lung? Explain why or why not.

Show an example where a figure in the text does not match what is seen in the FME.
